The demand for IT specialists is growing rapidly in today’s age of technology. Here are just some of the many fields that are out there for people with IT skills.

Professional, scientific and technical services (research and development, database development and administration etc.) have the greatest and broadest demand for IT skills, followed by Financial services (accounting, asset management), Infrastructure (such as public utilities), Distribution (shipping and transportation) and Public Sector (government). Manufacturing has less demand for IT skills overall. Large organizations lead the demand for skilled workers.

Canadian multinational technology companies are adding thousands of employees in 2004, indicating strong growth for IT in Canada. As an example, Accenture, a technology outsourcing, consulting and integration service company, had 3,800 employees in Canada in 2003. It will finish 2004 with more than 5,000. Similarly, IBM Canada Ltd. is also hiring at a brisk pace, mostly in software development, research, and integration and consulting. IBM Canada added 1200 new positions in 2004, bringing total employment to about 20,000.
