What is IT?

IT Innovation

It’s important to stay in touch with what’s happening in information technology (IT). Every day new innovations increase the use of IT in our lives. Technology has enhanced our world at work and at home, making it easier to manage everything from manufacturing processes to home security. Computers are an integral element in many Canadian homes, but that’s just the beginning. The more we use new products and gadgets, the more the industry will provide us with improved versions to keep pace with consumer demand. Just think, in a few years, you may influence Canada and the world with one of your technological innovations.

Here are just some of the many innovations that are changing how we live.

  • Digital technology is replacing traditional film for photography and video. Now even disposable cameras are getting the same features as expensive digital devices - including LCD screens.
  • Recording music has also become dominated by digital technology.
  • Handheld computer notebooks are overtaking traditional address books and day planners.
  • Property security has improved with advancements in micro-monitoring technology.
  • Point of Sale software and computer terminals replace cash registers in retail outlets.
  • Hello! – Digital, wireless telephones have become commonplace. New features include Internet access, photography and video.
  • Many vehicles are now equipped with satellite tracking systems, while onboard computers manage engine functions, fuel economy, braking and more.
  • Healthcare advances include state-of-the-art equipment, such as laser surgery and innovation in vast array of fields that improve our quality of life. For example, medical implants such as pacemakers will soon have an implantable power source that recharges their implant's batteries using electricity generated by the patient's own body heat.
  • Even teaching techniques and education have advanced with the aid of computers and high tech innovation.
  • Virtual, moving fences controlled from a laptop could one day herd cattle to fresh fields for grazing.

Canada’s Innovative Schools

Industry Canada has the SchoolNet Network of Innovative Schools (NIS). It is a unique project that recognizes schools using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in meaningful and imaginative ways to improve learning. The Network helps to ensure students, educators and community members are prepared for the challenges and opportunities of ICT for learning.
